In an attempt to quash the #EndSARS campaign, which is calling for the scrapping of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad unit of the police, alleged to be terrorizing citizens, the Nigeria police has launched a #SupportSARS campaign on social media.
Allegations of brutality, extra-judicial killings, torture, wanton arrests for bribes and other menacing conducts have since flooded the internet, with scores of citizens calling the police department “a cluster of criminals in uniform.”
However, while admitting that a few personnel of SARS may have acted against the ethics of the profession, the police said the majority of its officers are “good, sound, disciplined and commendable.”
We are quite concerned with the complaints against SARS and that is why the Inspector-General of Police has directed its re-organisation. We know that most of the complaints and allegations against SARS are not always true, but the IG has ordered an investigation to ascertain them. He has also directed that human rights desk be set up in all the state commands to handle rights abuse by SARS operatives. So, the people who started the #EndSARS campaign can channel their grievances to the desk officers for investigation. SARS has been in existence for over 40 years and it is essential to the force, so we cannot dismantle it,” he said.
Not convinced enough, some Nigerians have vowed to hold #EndSARS rally Nationwide on Monday, December 11, 2017.
